How to make your perfume last longer: 7 simple habits

A perfume that vanishes in two hours is not necessarily a bad perfume. Often, it all comes down to how it is worn.

01Moisturised skin

Perfume clings better to moisturised skin. Apply a neutral, unscented cream just before your perfume, ideally after a shower.

02The pulse points

The neck, inner wrists, behind the ears and the crook of the elbows are warmer: they diffuse perfume throughout the day.

03Do not rub

Rubbing the wrists together crushes the top notes and speeds up evaporation. Let the perfume dry naturally.

04Hair and clothes

Fibres hold perfume longer than skin. A spray on the hair or a wool scarf extends the trail. Avoid light silk, which can stain.

05The right concentration

An eau de parfum or a "parfum" version lasts longer than an eau de toilette, and woody, amber or musky notes last longer than citrus.

06Storing the bottle well

Heat, light and humidity damage perfume. Keep the bottle in its box, in a bedroom rather than the bathroom, and never in the sun or in a car.

Perfumes that last

Déclaration as a parfum: cardamom, cedar and fig.

Plum, lavender and tonka bean, very long-lasting.

Tuberose, jasmine and vanilla, as a parfum.

Lily, heliotrope and tonka bean, powdery.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I no longer smell my perfume after an hour?

The nose gets used to a smell it senses constantly. People around you often still smell it.

How many sprays are needed?

Two to four, depending on the concentration and the moment. Better a few, well placed.

Does perfume expire?

Well stored, an unopened perfume keeps for several years. Once open, it stays beautiful for a long time away from heat and light.

A well-worn perfume is noticed less for its strength than for its presence. These habits are enough to make the difference.
